Hot and Dry in New Mexico

The only colorful plant for miles around

This weekend Charles and I went to Ruidoso and Cloudcroft New Mexico for a quiet weekend away.  We enjoyed the races at Ruidoso Downs and my pitiful betting strategy paid off on one race!  I always bet on the gray horses.  Charles analyzes every single race, odds and all that.  He did better than I did, but at least I didn't disgrace myself and my grays didn't let me down.

After the races, we drove from Ruidoso to Cloudcroft, thru the Mescalero Apache Reservation.  The views were beautiful but everything was brown.  The entire area has been without moisture for a long time.  The Lincoln National Forest is completely closed.  We stopped for a visit with the one-armed bandits at the Inn of the Mountain Gods.  They took what little I won at the racetrack.

We stayed at The Lodge in Cloudcroft.  We have stayed there several other times.  Each time has been wonderful.  The atmosphere of the hotel is wonderful.  Climbing three flights of stairs to our room was exhausting.  Cloudcroft is at 8,900 ft.  We felt every single foot of it!

All in all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend and nice to get away.
